A comparison of MSI laptop motherboards
Next to Clevo barebones, notebooks from MSI are some of the easiest to disassemble and upgrade. We’ve collected a series of motherboard images from our own collection to show how the MSI G Series has evolved over the years from the old GT60 up to the latest GS65.
Most OEMs are uncomfortable with the general consumer tinkering with laptop hard drives, memory, and other core components for a variety of reasons. Gamers, however, tend to be more knowledgeable when it comes to upgrades and many gaming laptops have been designed to allow for easier servicing as a result.
MSI laptops in particular have been consistently easy to service even though some older models may require tearing a warranty sticker. The gallery below is our collection of different MSI laptops dating back to the GT60 to give an idea of how the internals have changed over the years.
A few observations can be made when seeing the differences between generations. For one, the number of copper heat pipes has grown substantially after each major revision. The GT62, for example, incorporates 6 heat pipes compared to just 4 on the GT60 while the GT63 includes a total of 8. Secondly, the budget GL and GP models are very similar to the pricier GF or GE models but with certain features removed to cut down on price.
The cheaper GL62M, for example, is essentially a GE72VR but with fewer speakers, fewer heat pipes, and fewer storage slots. In all cases, the decision to omit the aging optical drive on newer designs has allowed for MSI to build larger cooling solutions in its place.
Dell XPS 13
The PS42 Asus n550jv motherboard is notable for carrying the faster ‘1D10’ GeForce MX150 GPU instead of the slower ‘1D12’ variant found on many sub 15-inch Ultrabooks. MSI has priced its 14-inch system to compete with popular 13-inch Ultrabooks like the XPS 13, Spectre 13, or Yoga 920.
MSI, who is best known for its lineup of gaming laptops ranging from the small 13-inch GS30 to the hulking 18.4-inch GT83, has historically shown little interest when it comes to traditional Ultrabook offerings. Apparently, competing directly with popular Ultrabooks like the Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre 13, or Asus ZenBook 13 series hasn’t been a top priority. This all changed at Computex 2018 when the Taiwanese manufacturer showed off an original 14-inch Ultrabook designed to compete in a space outside of MSI’s comfort zone.
The slim PS42 is now shipping in at least three different SKUs as detailed by the official product page. All configurations will carry the same 1080p display with either the Core i5-8250U or i7-8550U CPU, integrated UHD Graphics 620 or GeForce MX150 GPU, 256 GB to 512 GB of M.2 SATA storage, or 8 GB to 16 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM.
As MSI’s first “true” Ultrabook, the PS42 will be an important testing ground for the manufacturer to see if there is enough interest in a traditional MSI Ultrabook. The OEM is hoping that its aluminum silver chassis, high 80 percent screen-to-body ratio, Windows Hello integration, and sleek matte design can attract business users and not just gamers. Naturally, the system borrows multiple elements from the successful Gaming G Series including Cooler Boost 3 and Nahimic 3.
The Asus n550jv motherboard is now available through major online retailers like NewEgg and Adorama. The base SKU with i5-8250U and integrated graphics costs $900 USD while the high-end SKU with i7-8550U and GeForce MX150 graphics costs $1300 USD.
