HP ScanJet Pro 3000 s3 Sheet

The HP ScanJet Pro 3000 s3 Sheet-Feed Scanner ($429.99) is a good value as a moderately priced desktop document scanner. An upgrade in capacity and features from the entry-level HP ScanJet Pro 2000 we reviewed recently, it is faster than the Editors’ Choice Canon imageFormula DR-C225 and the Brother ImageCenter ADS-2000e.

The ScanJet 3000 dl520-01uhf-a includes a well-rounded software bundle, and, in testing, the hardware performed well. Optical character recognition (OCR) accuracy is about average, and speed is excellent. All this makes the ScanJet 3000 our new Editors’ Choice personal desktop document scanner, though it’s also good for a small or micro office or workgroup.

While the ScanJet 3000 looks like the ScanJet 2000, at 7.5 by 12.2 by 7.8 inches (HWD) with its trays closed, and weighing 7.5 pounds, the former is somewhat smaller and lighter than its entry-level sibling’s 6 by 11.8 by 6.8 inches and 5.7 pounds, making it closer in size to the Brother ADS-2000e’s 7.1 by 11.8 by 8.7 inches and 7.3 pounds, but somewhat taller and lighter than the Canon DR-C225’s 6.1 by 11.8 by 8.7 inches and 6 pounds.

In any case, none of these sheet-feed document scanners require much of your desktop space. The ScanJet 3000 comes with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), as does the ScanJet 2000 and the ADS-2000e, whereas the DR-C225, on the other hand, has only a 30-sheet ADF.

Of the machines mentioned here, the ScanJet 3000’s daily duty cycle of 3,500 scans is by far the highest. Its entry-level sibling is rated at 2,000 scans per day, and the Brother and Canon models have daily duty cycles of 1,500 scans.

Different from its two higher-end siblings, the HP ScanJet Enterprise Flow 7000 and the HP ScanJet Enterprise Flow 5000, which let you choose from multiple workflow profiles directly from their control panels, the ScanJet 3000 allows you to initiate only one profile from the face of the machine itself.

Where the enterprise versions’ control panels provide buttons that let you choose options such as one- or two-sided scanning, or scroll through lists the profiles, the ScanJet 3000’s panel contains only three buttons: Power, Cancel, and Start.

All workflow aspects, including resolution, simplex (one-sided) or duplex (two-sided) scanning, and destination, must be defined from the bundled software. Workflow destinations include E-mail, Folder, Printer, Microsoft SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, or one of the bundled OCR applications (see Setup and Software, next), and you can save to the following file formats: image and searchable PDF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIF, TXT, and RTF.

As do the other HP ScanJet dl520-01uhf-a sheet-feed document scanners we’ve looked at recently, the ScanJet 3000 comes with a complete suite of software, which, in addition to the drivers, includes: HP Scan, HP Scanner Tools Utility, Nuance PaperPort (Windows only), IRIS Readiris, IRIS Cardiris (Windows only), and EMC ISIS (Windows only). The two HP utilities and PaperPort are installed from the included optical disc. The IRIS programs are offered as downloads during installation and each time you launch HP Scan, which is the primary scanning utility.

As we pointed out in our review of the ScanJet 2000, HP Scan is not as feature-rich as HP Smart Document Scan Software, the scanning interface that comes with both the ScanJet 5000 and the ScanJet 7000. However, the version of HP Scan that comes with the ScanJet 3000 is more powerful than the version bundled with the ScanJet 2000, in that the latter version doesn’t support OCR (whereas the ScanJet 3000 does), nor as many workflow destinations.

With the smaller ScanJet, to get OCR or searchable PDFs, you must run HP Scan inside Readiris. That said, as we did with the ScanJet 2000, we recommend that you scan within Readiris, anyway. In testing, on its own, HP Scan was dismally slow at saving to both image and searchable PDF formats.

Among other things, HP Scanner Tools Utility allows you to define and associate a profile for the Start button on the ScanJet 3000’s control panel, as well as change power management options, view the number of pages scanned, the current firmware version and other info, and set maintenance notifications.

PaperPort is a popular document management program that ships with many scanners and multifunction printers. Readiris is an OCR program, and Cardiris is a business card scanning and archiving utility. And, finally, EMC ISIS is an open source scanner driver included to help you integrate the ScanJet 3000 with non-HP software or document management systems.

HP rates the ScanJet 3000 at 35 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex scans and 70 images per minute (or ipm, where each image, or page side, is one image), in duplex mode. (We tested with Readiris at the program’s default 300dpi over USB 3.0 running on our standard Core i5 testbed PC running Windows 10 Professional.)

As mentioned, the scans we ran in HP Scan were quite slow, as low as 12ppm for scanning and saving to image PDF. Without the lag time (the time between when the last page hits the output tray and the document is subsequently saved to PDF), we clocked the ScanJet 3000 at 37.5ppm and 75ipm.

More important, though, is how fast the bundled software saves scans to a usable file format. When scanning to image PDF, the ScanJet 3000 churned at 33.3ppm and 65.2ipm, which is significantly higher than the other three entry-level scanners mentioned in this review. The Canon imageFormula DR-C225, for instance, managed 24.2ppm and 48.4ipm; the Brother ADS-2000e scanned to image PDF at 23ppm and 50ipm; and the ScanJet 2000 scanned and saved the same document at 23.1ppm and 40ipm.
